Graybar building-Art Deco from the 1920's

The Graybar building was bulilt from 1926-27. This Art Deco office building is still located at 43rd St. and Lexington Ave. One interesting feature is the struts that hold the canopy over the mail entrance. What appears to be bumps in the scan are actually rats! They are depicted as if they are climbing the anchor ropes on a ship. The struts also have the round "protectors" that are found on the nautical ropes to stop the rats from entering the ship. This photo from the about 1930 captures the great detail of this beautiful building. The newspaper delivery truck at the far right of the photo is from The Sun. The trolley is a reminder of how much NYC has changed.
